The Power of Cannabinoids: THC, CBD, CBG, and CBN Explained

Cannabinoids are important chemicals found in plants (most notably, cannabis) that interact with the human body in intricate ways to create unique effects for consumers, such as the feeling of being high or promoting relaxation.

Although research is still ongoing with cannabis and cannabinoids, existing data and anecdotal research tells us that understanding cannabinoids is the key to taking advantage of the benefits of the cannabis plant.

When you take an edible that has compounds like THC, CBD, CBG, or CBN, you are using cannabinoids to achieve a certain experience – whether that’s pain relief, a sense of calm, or simply to unwind and enjoy life.

We’ve rounded up everything you need to know about the power of cannabinoids and how to tailor your cannabis consumption with this newfound knowledge:

What are cannabinoids?

As mentioned, cannabinoids are chemicals found in the cannabis plant, as well as a handful of other plants. These are known as phytocannabinoids.

Certain chemicals – like THC, CBD, etc. – are known to create unique effects such as euphoria, pain relief, sleepiness, increased appetite, and more. Sound familiar? These are some of the common “side effects” associated with consuming cannabis.

There are also other types of cannabinoids, including some that can be found naturally in your own body, known as endocannabinoids (or endogenous cannabinoids). These compounds are found in the endocannabinoid system, also known as the ECS.

The ECS helps to maintain equilibrium in bodily processes including sleep, memory, mood, appetite, and pain.

The kicker is that all these different types of cannabinoids are structurally very similar to one another, meaning plant cannabinoids can bind with the cannabinoid receptors in your endocannabinoid system, triggering responses throughout the body.

Enter, the entourage effect.

What is the entourage effect?

The entourage effect is the result of phytocannabinoids interacting with endocannabinoids. It mainly refers to the relationship between cannabinoids, terpenes, and other compounds found in cannabis, all working together to produce therapeutic effects.

When combined, all these different compounds create a more profound impact than when used individually. In other words, the entourage effect is the code name for “the more the merrier”.

For instance, CBD might help you feel calm on its own. When combined with the psychoactive effects of THC, CBD will counteract and mellow out some of those more intense feelings, producing a balanced effect. Then, terpenes found in cannabis can enhance the absorption of THC and CBD cannabinoids while adding their own spice and flair, further enhancing your mood.

This collaboration among different compounds amplifies the therapeutic potential of cannabis, making it more effective in helping alleviate symptoms such as pain, inflammation, anxiety, and more.

Long story short: The entourage effect underscores the significance of considering the whole plant rather than isolated compounds when exploring the medicinal properties of cannabis.

What are the basic cannabinoids I should know?

We don’t want you to feel overwhelmed, but hundreds of cannabinoids are found in the cannabis plant. That doesn’t mean you have to know each one, though.

We’ve curated a list of the most basic cannabinoids that you should know about as a beginner or just as someone shopping adult-use cannabis in Connecticut:

THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol)

Probably the most well-known cannabinoid, THC is primarily responsible for the psychoactive effects associated with cannabis. When THC interacts with the brain’s cannabinoid receptors, it results in feelings of euphoria, relaxation, and sometimes, altered perception. (We’ve all been there, right?)

Beyond its recreational use, THC has also been linked to several therapeutic properties, including pain relief, muscle relaxation, appetite stimulation, and nausea reduction.

CBD (Cannabidiol)

CBD is the popular cousin of THC. Known to be non-psychoactive, this cannabinoid can instead offer calming and anti-anxiety effects. Because of this, much more research exists around CBD and it is considered legal in all 50 states.

Studies suggest that CBD may help with anxiety, insomnia, chronic pain, and even addiction.

CBG (Cannabigerol)

CBG is a newer cannabinoid, known to be a minor cannabinoid. Despite being categorized this way, it’s often referred to as the “mother cannabinoid” because it serves as a precursor to other cannabinoids like THC and CBD.

While research on CBG is still in its early stages, it shows promising therapeutic potential. The compound is believed to have anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective, and antimicrobial properties.

In edibles and other cannabis products, CBG works synergistically with other cannabinoids and terpenes to enhance the overall remedial impacts. Its presence contributes to the entourage effect, amplifying the benefits of cannabis consumption.

CBN (Cannabinol)

CBN is another cannabinoid that forms as THC ages or undergoes oxidation. It is known for its sedative properties and is often associated with promoting sleep.

While CBN is not as well-researched as some other cannabinoids like THC and CBD, studies have suggested that it may have several potential therapeutic properties, such as:

  • Promoting relaxation and sleep
  • Analgesic properties (pain relief)
  • Appetite stimulation
  • Anti-inflammatory properties

The exciting news is that you’ll be able to try this cannabinoid out for yourself! Our SoundView kitchen has added a Berry Dreamy 1:1 THC:CBN Gummy, a G’night Grape 2:1 THC:CBN Gummy, and a Midnight Mint 1:1 THC:CBN Dark Chocolate Bar to help you experience the relaxing effects.
